And there you have it...the first snow storm of the season. Winter is officially here. Strange how I feel as though I can relax now and focus on next year's garden. Now that the winter veggies are tucked in for the season, my next project will be to set up an indoor seed starting operation and purchase the materials needed to make soil blocks (which I'm finding is not cheap). I have so much to research and learn. But then again, that's part of the fun!

We've had a few flakes but no significant accumulation yet. I'm hoping it will hold off a bit longer. Maybe no winter this year! That's just me dreaming...

Winter is about to arrive here any day also, but in the form of lots of rain (hopefully). The sand bag stations along Carmel Valley Road have fresh mounds of sand.

Thomas, we have extended the season beyond... you especially. I still cannot believe we just had the last tomatoes from the garden. We are experiencing unusual below freezing temperatures and they are likely headed your way. Stay warm. ;)
That's a pretty good snow you got there. We had a slight dusting yesterday morning, but that was all. It's 23 degrees here now, though! brrrr....

Your snow looks beautiful! We were teased with the promise of snow yesterday, but all we got was the sleet/rain/mud mixture! I havent' even been out to the garden since returning from vacation, but I can see my lettuces from the window, lol! Good luck with your seed starting, I started so many last year I ended up having a party to give them new homes when they were ready! Seemed like a good excuse for a cocktail. :) Seems like just yesterday I was putting away the lights and heat mats... time to pull them out again!
Thomas, look at www.jbest123.com and search his site for his soil blocks. He made a great contraption out of a pill bottle and then improved on that.
We had about 1 inch of snow on Dec 1, it was gone by lunch but it was a nice surprise to wake up too. We have predictions of snow in the area this weekend, but I don't feel it so I doubt we will get any.
Its so pretty isn't it? I can't wait to see how the soil blocks go. I haven't broken down and bought any yet.
Looks pretty! We had about 4-inches overnight. It is expected to mostly melt by afternoon, but more will be heading our way mid-week.
I too have been researching soil blocks for seed starting. I'm not sure if that is what I will use yet.

I have decided it is time to plan anew, too. I will not use soil blocks, but I do make my little paper pots.
That picture of your garden under the snow blanket looks so forlorn. The picture from my office window is forlorn looking too; grey, foggy, and raining. At least, the killing freeze killed fleas and other bugs that would plague us next year.
Your garden is all tucked in and ready to weather the winter chill. Enjoy the armchair gardening - planning, dreaming, and browsing through options - while you can. Spring will soon be here.
It was more snow that I expected. I've been busy reading my catalogs and getting ready. I started using the soil blocks this year and after a frustrating beginning I love them. They do take a while to learn to make and need more water than you expect. I'll probably buy more sizes this coming year.
We got about 10 inches Fri/Sat (in sw MI) and it's down to about a 2 inch dusting now.
I'm doing soil blocks for the first time this year too. I'll be coming back to see how yours went, I've heard they can be more difficult than they look!
